The National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC®) is a standard that provides a comparison of commodities moving in interstate, intrastate, and foreign commerce. The NMFC is a living standard and continues to evolve. While major updates may occur periodically, smaller refinements are made as new data, industry trends, and feedback emerge. Staying engaged through ClassIT+, Public Docket Files, and NMFTA events ensures you remain current.
How can I tell whether a classification change affects my freight or my customers’ freight?
The most reliable approach is to review your commonly shipped items in ClassIT+, then cross-reference with the most recent Public Docket Files. Many companies also perform an internal audit with pricing, operations, and customer service teams to verify alignment.
Do I need to update my internal systems every time the NMFC changes?
Yes. Any system that references NMFC item numbers or classes — including TMS platforms, quoting tools, rating engines, and documentation workflows — should be updated to match the current NMFC to ensure billing accuracy and prevent disputes.
How does density-based classification affect how we package or measure freight?
Because density plays a larger role, accurate measurements are essential. NMFTA recommends:
- Recording exact dimensions on every bill of lading
- Ensuring freight is packaged compactly
- Training teams on calculating density and interpreting density tables

If we disagree with a classification or need clarification, what should we do?
You can submit a request for interpretation directly to NMFTA’s Classification Department. Providing photographs, dimensions, construction details, and typical packaging information will help the team provide accurate guidance.
