Our 90-second video introduces the new SCAC Verified™ experience, the industry-wide benefits of identity assurance, and how this change strengthens trust across every movement of freight.

Cargo Theft and Freight Fraud Continue to Surge

The U.S. trucking industry loses up to $6.6 billion each yearmore than $18 million per day* to theft and fraud schemes like double brokering, impersonation, and ficticiuos pickups.

Fraud thrives when identity isn't verified.

ID Verification Coming Soon for Non-Class 8 Carriers

Effective February 26, 2026

For decades, SCAC has been the industry's universal identifier.

Now, it is evolving.

Beginning February 26, 2026, non-Class 8 carriers will complete ID verification during SCAC applications or renewal. This transforms SCAC into an identity-assured credential, providing a clearer, more reliable signal of trust during onboarding, tender, and pickup.

SCAC = Trust, Verified.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have a question? We're here to help you.

What is a Non-Class 8 Carrier?

This category includes all vehicles with a GVWR of 33,000 pounds or less. This notification pertains to non-Class 8, mainly going to the ports (smaller vehicles).

What is a Class 8 Carrier?

These are "severe-duty" vehicles with a GVWR of over 33,000 pounds (14,969 kg). Examples include tractor-trailers (semi-trucks or 18-wheelers), large dump trucks, and cement trucks. Operating these vehicles typically requires a commercial driver's license (CDL).

What is SCAC Verified?

SCAC Verified is the enhanced version of the Standard Carrier Alpha Code® Online that includes an identity verification step for eligible carriers. This transforms SCAC from a basic. identifier into an identity-assured credential that helps prevent impersonation, double brokering, and fictitious pickups.

Why is identity verification being added to SCAC issuance and renewal?

Identity misuse is one of the leading causes of freight fraud. By tying each SCAC to a verified individual, the industry gains a clear, checkable trust signal at onboarding, tendering, and pickup—helping to stop fraud before it starts.

Who will be required to complete ID verification?

Non-Class 8 carriers will complete a one-time digital ID verification during the SCAC application or renewal process. Other carrier classes may be added in future phases as industry needs evolve.

How does ID verification work?

ID verification is a simple, secure, one-time digital process. Carriers will confirm their identity using a government-issued ID and a live selfie match. Once verified, their SCAC will reflect an identity-assured status in the SCAC Verified lookup.

Will ID verification slow down my SCAC renewal?

No. The verification process is designed to be completed in just a few minutes. Most carriers will be verified instantly or within a short review window. Once complete, you will not need to re-verify unless otherwise required.

What happens if a carrier cannot complete ID verification?

Carriers who encounter issues will be guided through troubleshooting steps and alternative verification options. A clear remediation and appeal path is provided to ensure legitimate carriers can successfully complete verification.

What information will be visible in the SCAC Verified lookup tool?

Only status information is displayed—never personal data. The lookup will show whether a SCAC is verified, pending, lapsed, or unknown, along with the last verification date. No PII is shared, stored, or displayed.

How does SCAC Verified help prevent freight fraud?

Fraud schemes often succeed when a criminal impersonates a legitimate carrier. SCAC Verified introduces a universal, checkable identity signal that brokers, shippers, platforms, and insurers can rely on—reducing fraud opportunities across the entire freight ecosystem.

Does SCAC Verified replace other vetting processes?

No. SCAC Verified complements, but does not replace, other safety or compliance checks. It adds identity assurance to the process, but does not certify safety, insurance status, or operational performance.

Will brokers and shippers be able to filter for verified SCACs?

Yes. Platforms and TMS providers will have access to a badge and filter system that allows users to sort by verified SCACs during onboarding or tender—making it easier to reduce risk in real time.

What will happen to the existing SCAC Online system?

SCAC Online is being rebranded and updated as SCAC Verified, offering the same fundamental functionality with enhanced clarity, improved user experience, and identity-based status information.

Does identity verification apply to brokers or shippers?

No. ID verification applies only to eligible carriers when obtaining or renewing a SCAC. However, brokers and shippers will benefit from using SCAC Verified as part of their standard vetting and tendering workflows.

How often will carriers need to complete ID verification?

ID verification is required one time per carrier, unless future events necessitate re-verification (e.g., name or organizational changes). The SCAC renewal process itself remains annual.

How does SCAC Verified protect small and independent carriers?

Identity assurance helps protect legitimate carriers from impersonation—one of the most common causes of reputational damage, load theft, and fraudulent tendering. It creates a more level playing field for smaller operators.

Is SCAC Verified mandatory?

For eligible carrier groups (e.g., non-Class 8 carriers), ID verification is required to complete SCAC issuance or renewal. This ensures industry consistency and strengthens the shared defense against fraud.

Where can I get help with the verification process?

NMFTA will offer guides, support articles, and step-by-step instructions, along with contact options if additional help is needed. More resources will be shared as the SCAC Verified launch approaches.
