SCAC Update:
NMFTA to Become Sole Issuer of SCACs
for Non-Class 8 Carriers
Strengthening Security. Preventing Fraud. Protecting Trust.
Effective February 26, 2026, the National Motor Freight Traffic Association, Inc. (NMFTA)™ will implement a verification process for SCAC applications and renewals for non-Class 8 carriers and become the sole issuer of all Standard Carrier Alpha Codes® (SCAC®) for non-Class 8 carriers.
This change ends third-party reseller processing and ensures that every SCAC for non-Class 8 carriers is issued securely, accurately, and directly through NMFTA’s official SCAC application—scaccode.com.
By centralizing SCAC issuance and implementing verification, NMFTA is taking a decisive step to:
- Stop fraud and increase security;
- Eliminate confusion caused by unauthorized reseller websites;
- Protect carriers, brokers, and shippers from overpayment and data misuse; and
- Strengthen the industry's trusted identifier.
Please note: If you are a reseller of Class 8 SCACs, no changes are being made at this time.

Why NMFTA is Making this Change?
SCAC has long been the universal code that identifies carriers across the freight transportation industry.
To safeguard that trust, NMFTA is simplifying the process—ensuring there is one secure, authoritative source for all applications and renewals.
This change for non-Class 8 carriers:
- Ends confusion caused by look-alike reseller sites;
- Reduces the risk of fraudulent or imposter applications; and
- Enhances data accuracy across the supply chain.
This is about modernizing for security and continuing NMFTA's role as a steward of industry trust.
This change works to increase security and safeguard the industry's trusted identifier.
- Joe Ohr, chief operating officer, NMFTA
What This Means for Carriers
No Disruption to Existing SCACs
- Existing SCACs remain valid until renewal.
- Future renewals will be processed directly through NMFTA.
One Official Path Forward
- Only use scaccode.com for all applications.
- NMFTA's fees and support remain unchanged.

What This Means for Resellers
NMFTA recognizes the valuable role resellers and third-party service providers have played in assisting carriers over the years. As of February 26, 2026, these services will conclude as part of NMFTA’s transition to a centralized, direct-issuance model. This change ensures that all SCAC codes are issued directly through NMFTA, improving accuracy, eliminating confusion, and reducing fraud risk across the industry.
To support a smooth transition:
- NMFTA has provided FAQs and Help Center articles to help resellers inform their customers.
- Resellers are encouraged to redirect all customers to scaccode.com for new applications and renewals.
- NMFTA will continue to share resources and updates to assist during this transition period.
This is about modernizing for security and continuing NMFTA's role as a steward of industry trust.
A Collaborative Transition
This decision reflects NMFTA’s responsibility as a good steward of the freight industry—taking proactive steps to strengthen security, transparency, and trust.
By removing unnecessary intermediaries and streamlining the process, NMFTA is ensuring that every SCAC issued is authentic and securely tied to its rightful owner.
This change was made for the good of the industry, helping everyone—carriers, brokers, shippers, and insurers—move freight with confidence.
Why is NMFTA ending SCAC reseller services for non-Class 8 carriers?
To protect carriers and the broader supply chain from confusion and fraud. Centralizing issuance ensures every SCAC is issued directly and securely by NMFTA.
When does this change take effect?
The transition takes effect on February 26, 2026. After this date, all SCAC applications and renewals must be submitted directly through NMFTA’s official SCAC application, scaccode.com.
How does this help prevent freight fraud?
Unauthorized reseller sites have created confusion and, in some cases, risk for carriers. Direct issuance eliminates these vulnerabilities and strengthens the foundation for future identity verification measures.
What happens to existing SCAC's issued by resellers?
Your current SCAC remains valid until its renewal date. When you renew, you’ll complete the process directly with NMFTA.
How do I know I'm on the official NMFTA site?
Always start at scaccode.com—the only authorized portal for SCAC applications and renewals. You can also access more SCAC information on nmfta.org/scac. Avoid third-party or look-alike websites.
Will pricing change?
No. NMFTA’s standard SCAC application and renewal fees remain the same.
