2025 NMFC Changes
for LTL Shipments

We are Simplifying the Complex for Improved Freight Classification

History of the NMFC

The National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC)® system was established in 1936 to help standardize LTL freight shipping to improve predictability in billing and load planning. It has evolved to accommodate changes in the industry and will encounter another major update in 2025 that will impact all parties in the LTL supply chain. The National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA) is committed to working with the industry to make the transition smooth.

Why the Change?

The current NMFC system is complex and outdated. This reimagination aims to:

simplify icon - three lines merge into one

Simplify LTL Classification

We'll use a standardized approach based on density, handling, stowability, and liability.

user experience icon - three people with a tick

Enhance User Experience

The NMFC will be easier to use and understand.

accuracy icon - paper with badge and magnifying glass

Increase Efficiency

Classifying freight will be more accurate
on the first try.

What's Changing?

We're implementing a phased approach, with the first changes coming in Docket 2025-1. Here's a summary:

  • Standardized density scale for LTL freight.
  • Unique identifiers for freight with special handling, stowability, or liability needs.
  • Condensed and modernized commodity listings.
  • Improved usability of the ClassIT classification tool.

How Will This Affect The LTL Shipper?

Number 1 Icon

Easier to identify your NMFC item and freight class.

Number 2 Icon

Lower density classes added for heavier freight.

Number 3 Icon

Freight with same characteristics will have the same freight class.

Number 4 Icon

NMFC item, sub, and freight class may change.

Number 5 Icon

The process for preparing LTL shipments may need to change.

Number 6 Icon

In most cases, handling unit dimensions and weight will be needed.
